It's not looking great, but we still have the big hitters to come (things like Rolling Stone and other big magazines).
The Boston Globe: "Wolfmother once again lives in thrall of Black Sabbath and the heavy hard-rock boogie of ’70s bands like Foghat, which calls out for either irony or (better yet) chutzpah — qualities the band ignores. [...] Mostly, though, “Victorious” simply colors within the lines drawn by others, scratching the itch of those already inclined to seek it out."
Consequence of Sound: "Stockdale and his band have more to offer, but he needs a cleansing. He needs to be set loose in the desert with a 4-track and a single Russian-built Big Muff. That’s it. Return to the loam, start again. Maybe even call up Heskett and Ross. That’s the return that would make Wolfmother truly victorious."
News.com.au: "Stockdale rips riffs off everybody, staples them all together and declares himself Victorious. You’ve got to admire his middle-finger-to-critics-and-good-taste audacity."
There are a couple of okay reviews though...
The Queensland Times: "VICTORIOUS is the new album by Australian rock band Wolfmother and it is true to the traditions of the Aussie rock world with heavy sounds built in a beach-side studio."
Zumic: "Right off the bat, Victorious opens up with high energy rock tunes “The Love That You Give” and “Victorious.” “Baroness” is a mid-tempo rocker that’s drips with swagger [...] “Eye Of The Beholder” closes out the album in true rock fashion with thunderous drums, hypnotic guitar riffs, and drum rolls that would make the late John Bonham proud."
I'll be interested to see how this is all reflected once the album is up on Metacritic. I'm thinking it's gonna be a bit rough, but hey, it's more important what the fans think in the end!
